WHAT IS A PELVIC PAIN CENTER? 

 
The Pelvic Pain Center in Annapolis is a local and regional center for women seeking evaluation and treatment for pelvic pain that has been difficult to treat. Conditions we commonly see include: endometriosis, adhesions, neuropathies, interstitial cystitis, painful sex, muscular problems, some bowel and bladder problems, as well as sexual problems due to pain. The Center for Pelvic Pain can coordinate care through multiple specialties and can provide specialized medical and surgical techniques not available elsewhere.  We work closely with a network of specialists including general surgeons, peripheral nerve surgeons, urogynecologists, physical therapists, gastroenterologists, urologists, interventional radiologists and pain management physicians to be "the captain of the ship" and coordinate and manage your chronic pain issues.

WHAT TYPE OF PATIENTS DO WE MANAGE IN THE CENTER?

We see a variety of types of patients in the center.  Any patient with a chronic pelvic or vulvar pain condition who continues to experience pain is an excellent candidate.  We also frequently see women with chronic vulvovaginitis symptoms and chronic pain with sexual intimacy as these conditions frequently overlap.  We offer all types of gynecologic care from well women exams, contraceptives, menstrual disorders, to severe chronic pain.  Many of our patients maintain their primary gynecologist while we focus on their chronic pain complaints.  For patients without a current gynecologist, we can also provide these services.
  
 
WHAT KIND OF EVALUATION IS DONE?
 
We find that chronic pain can have more than one cause. For example, a woman with endometriosis or scar tissue from surgery may develop muscle tightness and bowel problems as well as poor sleep patterns and depressed mood. Some or all of these problems may need attention before health is restored. We try to get as complete a picture as possible of all the parts to a person’s problem, including the way it impacts your family, relationships, job, and leisure activities.

We provide a highly personalized experience including cutting edge technology. We utilize an electronic medical record in place of traditional paper charts. We also have a video colposcope which aids in patient education and improves diagnostic accuracy. 

We spend adequate time with patients, explain thoroughly the basis for your problems, and carefully outline a plan of management to ensure that you reach your optimal level.

We also provide a personalized approach to routine gynecologic care. We provide well woman exams, contraceptive counseling, and manage all types of gynecologic problems.

Dr. Marvel is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and provides minimally invasive surgical therapy for endometriosis, pelvic congestion syndrome, fibroids, and pelvic adhesions. He performs both total laparoscopic hysterectomies as well as laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomies. He is also one of a few surgeons nationwide who is experienced in performing pudendal nerve decompression surgery.
